CHILDREN’S DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION – SPRINGFIELD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The Children’s Director shall be a well-trained professional, committed to Jesus Christ and to minister with children and their families. The Children’s Director shall possess the administrative skills necessary to perform his or her duties and carry out details, as well as the interpersonal and relational skills for working with children and adults within the congregation. The Children’s Director will be responsible for working with children who are in the age range of infancy through fifth grade. The time requirement is 40 hours per week. VISION: Leading Children to Follow Christ MISSION: The R.O.C.K. Children’s Ministry endeavors to REACH OUT for CHRIST’S KIDS. REACH – through church programs and events OUT – to the church, community and beyond for CHRIST’S – presenting the gospel message of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord KIDS – to children, on their level, in a fun, nurturing and safe environment RESPONSIBILITIES: a. VOLUNTEERS – 1. Recruit & train volunteers for children’s ministry programs and activities 2. Ensure volunteers are Safe Sanctuary trained, including a background check 3. Mentor volunteers in developing their leadership and discipleship skills. Lead through personal example and by practicing the means of grace. 4. Lead regular planning meetings with volunteer leaders. 5. Publish volunteer leader schedules for activities/programs b. PROGRAMMING – 1. Provide leadership and oversee planning, organization and implementation of annual children’s activities including: a. Easter Egg Hunt b. Vacation Bible School c. Promotion Sunday d. Bibles for rising 3rd graders e. Trunk-or-treat f. Breakfast with Santa g. Christmas Program h. Summer Activities 2. Provide leadership and oversee planning, organization and implementation of children’s programs such as: a. Nusery b. Acolyte Ministry c. Children’s Church d. Toddler Tuesday e. Wonderful Wednesday f. Sunday Night Programming g. Camps and Retreats 3. Coordinate volunteers for weekly Children’s Sermons at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship services as needed 4. Provide calendar dates for children’s ministry events to the church secretary to be published in the Monthly Messenger, Sunday bulletin, the church calender and on the website 5. Purchase and utilize valuable resources and materials relevant to children’s ministry. c. COORDINATE 1. Work with Senior Pastor, Children’s Ministry Leadership Team, and Education Committee to coordinate Children’s Ministry into the total ministry of the church. 2. Offer ideas and personal input about future goals for the church’s ministry with and for children. 3. Work to develop relationship with area church Children’s Directors to promote ministry to children and their families. 4. Continually evaluate activities, programs, and events in accord with the vision and mission statement of the Children’s Ministry. 5. Be amenable to performing other duties as deemed necessary for the good of SUMC’s total ministry. d. RELATIONSHIPS 1. Build relationships with the parents and children in the church. 2. Communicate with parents about the children’s ministry programs, calender, volunteer needs, parental concerns, etc. 3. Work as a professional with the ministry staff to provide for the pastoral needs of the congregation. e. ACCOUNTABILITY 1. The Children’s Director shall be accountable to the Senior Pastor and amenable to the Children’s Leadership Team and Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). 2. Submit a monthly report to the Administrative Board on past and upcoming events and other relative information. 3. Attend monthly Administrative Board meetings. 4. Should the Children’s Director feel mistreated by any staff, church member, or committee in the congregation, the Children’s Director may discuss grievances confidentially within the SPRC. 5. Compile, implement and maintain a Children’s Ministry budget. 6. Attend workshops, conferences, or implement self-study to stay informed on new and effective ways to implement Children’s Ministry, as well as for personal spiritual growth.
